A couple of jerks wake me up at the crack of noon. Seems my klepto uncle stole an ancient deck of Tarot cards from a high-powered wizard, and too many losers want to ruin my day to get them back.
The cards are cool, so I check them out, but my magic-happy cousin, Sabrina, tells me I'm not supposed to touch them. Oops. Too late. Now the damn cards are tuned to me, and if someone else wants to use them, I have to die. Why couldn't she have led with that information?
Magic was never my scene, but my dad is one of the most powerful wizards in the world, so I've got unrealized potential if I ever bother to apply myself. I'd rather power nap, but with wizards, gunslingers, and cannibalistic shark dudes coming at me, that's not gonna happen.
They say I'm a half-assed wizard, but if I don't play my cards right, I'm gonna get my whole ass killed.

I greatly enjoyed Gary Jonas' "Jonathan Slade" series, so I was delighted to be able to read an advance copy of the first book in his new series. (I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.) The book is definitely a quick and light read, though well written, as all of Jonas' books are. It's full of enough occasional humor to make me break out in laughter while reading, even when I was out in public places. The characters are interesting, and I look forward to seeing more of them.So why a four-star review, and not five? A couple of reason. The first is that the main character starts out as fairly unlikable, and agressively stays that way. He's lazy, indulgent, and generally not particularly aware of what matters to other people. The common thing that everyone says about him is that he's full of potential, but he's not doing anything with it. He's also a wise-cracking smart-ass, which seems to be de rigueur in Urban Fantasy these days, but which rather palls when not counterbalanced by a degree of empathy. I had a great deal of trouble cheering him on. Also, while the characters in the book are interesting, they are also sketchy. We don't really get to see deeply into any of them, though there are enough hints to the depths that we wish we could. Oddly enough, some of the minor characters are actually the most intriguing.
So basically, all of the framework is laid down in this book to support a marvelous tale, but it's not yet realized. I can only wish that Gary Jonas had chosen to make this first book in the series longer, so that he could have filled in some of the missing pieces. So the question is, is there enough potential to make me buy the next book? Absolutely, and I intend to do so. Hopefully this series will expand and fulfill the potential shown in this book.

The HalfAssed Wizard Volume 1 Gary Jonas 9781546931256 Books Reviews
Nice beginner-magician story with some twists in there. The main character isn't the most lovable but he is slowly learning.
Man I'm a big fan of urban fantasy and I really liked this one. I love snarky characters like Spidey and this book has a great one. But I also like a good story with some bumps and twists - this one has them too. Buy the book - I did and I'll tell you I'm going to get the follow-up right now
I enjoy this author's other books. This one starts out a little slow, but has a satisfying conclusion that opens up interesting possibilities for future books. Definitely not your typical hero, but he does ultimately redeem himself. Others have covered the plot so I'll leave this short review with the recommendation that you give this new series a try -- definitely worth your time.
As a middle school kid I used to read a series (only 2 if I remember correctly) about a character called “the Mud Hen”. He was a very bright but lazy slacker. He and his group of friends would get into trouble and the Mud Hen would devise clever ways to extricate them. This series has a similar feel to it. It is a fun twist to have a powerful wizard who only reluctantly gets involved instead of being the white knight riding about seeking metaphorical (and sometimes real) dragons to slay. Having read books 1 & 2 I’m looking forward to book 3 and beyond.
I'm giving this a five not because the story was so great, but because I think the character and his world have a lot of promise. I've read a lot of Gary Jonas' work and he can tell a good story with excellent characters and fun dialogue. This is The Half-Assed Wizard's origin story so it had to spend a lot of time setting his world up. The ending was a little abrupt, but I guess I'm grading on a curve, because, from what I've seen, I think it'll be worth coming back

I have read almost all of Gary Jonas books and love them all so much so when I saw this I jumped for it. I have the eBook of this book but just haven't read it yet. I would love to 'hear' it. I was lucky to be chosen. This book do not disappoint. It was full of the Jonas humor, adventure, and crazy situations that Jonas characters seem to get into. Fun and exciting is the words I would describe this book. I am always glad to read his book and want to kick myself for waiting to read this.
The narrator did an awesome job so I am glad that I waited in that way. I have listened to this narrator before and he always adds so much to a story. He takes a great story and makes it "POP". Great job!!!
I enjoy Gary Jonas's Jonathan Shade novels, so I was delighted to have a chance to review this first book in his new series. Brett Masters is the slacker scion of a powerful magical family, more interested in playing with his band, getting laid, and taking naps than living up to his potential as a powerful mage. When a mysterious Tarot deck arrives at his house, he soon finds himself caught up in something bigger than he ever wanted to be a part of. After all, how can he get in all his napping time when so many things are trying to kill him? He's got allies, including a female relative who's a much better mage than he is, and a vampire bandmate, but he's still going to have to step out of his comfort zone a lot further than he expected if he wants to make it out of this one alive.
The writing is, as always, great--funny, fast-paced, and only very rarely dragging just a bit (never for long). I'll admit I wasn't as crazy about Brett as I was about Jonathan Shade or even some of the other characters in this novel (I liked Sabrina and the vampire better--Brett spent a lot of the novel coming off as fairly unlikable, to be honest, and far more of a "dudebro" type than I generally prefer) but since this is a new novel in a series, I see a lot of potential for him to become much more likable as the series progresses. Looking forward to the next one!
